Most construction projects in New York City require approval and permits from the Department of Buildings (DOB). However, some minor alterations such as painting, plastering, installing new cabinets, plumbing fixture replacement, resurfacing floors, and non-structural roof repairs may not require a work permit. Please note that contractors must hold a Department of Consumer Affairs Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) license.

Workers' Compensation Insurance is necessary before the Department of Buildings (DOB) issues a permit.
